— The Pittsburgh Steelers have opened at least seven new restaurants and a handful of other eateries in the last two months, including two in Atlanta, according to a Pittsburgh Business Journal analysis of restaurant data and interviews with dozens of restaurant owners.
The Steelers opened two new locations in April in downtown Atlanta and a downtown restaurant in Atlanta’s International District.
The other two opened in late April in Washington, D.C., and late April or early May in Nashville, Tennessee.
The team also opened a restaurant in Washington in March.
The two Atlanta restaurants opened on April 14.
The new restaurants will include a small bar and a wine bar, plus more casual seating.
“I think that’s really cool,” said Steve Cramer, the team’s chief operating officer.
“We can take the casual, small bar concept and create a great, casual atmosphere for people who don’t like to go out.
The team has two new restaurants in the Atlanta area: a small-plate restaurant at the corner of Fourth and Market streets in the Buckhead neighborhood, and a new location in the University District, near the Georgia Dome. “
It’s really a great opportunity for us to get to know a new city and try new things, and also make the team more visible and more in people’s lives.”

A third location is set to open in mid-September in the Washington area.
The owners said the team has not yet decided whether to open the new locations outside of the city.
“The idea is to try to get a little bit of the Atlanta feel to the franchise in general,” said Mike Bohn, the president of the Buckheads-based Buckhead Food Group.
That’s something we need to try, just like the NFL does in the rest of the country. “
But we don’t want to open there until we can really see what’s going on in the area and how people feel about it.
The NFL has opened dozens of new restaurants since 2010, and many of them have been franchise-only. “
A lot of people will be excited by that.”

In the last year, the NFL has announced plans to expand its franchise-oriented dining and entertainment offerings by about 2,000 locations.
The franchise model is based on the idea that teams are better served by offering a more casual dining experience and a more premium beer and wine experience to the public, as well as offering premium food.
But the NFL is looking to expand to more areas, including cities with large populations, to help build its fan base and attract new fans.
The NFL opened a franchise-focused restaurant in Indianapolis in October, and two more locations in Indianapolis will open in the next month.
“If we can keep expanding, then we can have the best experience,” said Joe Reitz, the general manager of the team in Indianapolis.
“To expand to new places and to really do something in the market is something that really helps us grow and be successful.”
The Pittsburgh Business Review reported that the Steelers have spent $2.8 million on restaurants and other marketing over the last 12 months.
In a July 21 memo to franchise owners, NFL deputy commissioner Troy Vincent said the league was working to increase the number of restaurants in franchise-friendly cities by 1,000 or more.
The memo said the franchise-specific restaurant program would “expand rapidly in the coming years, but we anticipate that it will not occur in the foreseeable future.”
In May, the Steelers announced a partnership with C.J. Klein, who runs the global marketing for NFL teams, to build a team-centric marketing program for the league.
“That is a really cool idea,” said Cramer of the C.T.F.R. partnership.
Cramer said the CVRM was working with Cramer’s company to create a series of marketing events in which franchise owners could have dinner and a “sip of craft beer” with other NFL players. “
There’s a lot of things you could do to help drive that and really help drive the brand.”

The Pittsburgh business magazine, which has published several reports on the team and its owner, recently published a list of five franchise-branded restaurants that will open between this season and next.
The list included a local beer garden in Pittsburgh, a bar in the Pittsburgh suburb of Middletown and a restaurant that has become popular in recent years.
Cramer declined to name the restaurants, but said that two locations were in the metro Pittsburgh area.
“For the team to get so many of those things, that’s very cool,” he said.
“Those are really important and valuable places for the Steelers to be in.”
